The Argan Fruit, Kernel and Seeds

Moroccan Argan Oil is produced from the seeds of the Argan Tree (Argania spinosa). Argania is one of the oldest trees in the world but have a very small habitat (~ 8000 sq miles) and is found only in the Argan forests in south western Morocco. In the last 50 years, humans have managed to wipe off 50% of the Argania Tree population. To conserve these trees, UNESCO declared Argan forest as a Biosphere Reserve in 1998 and this eventually prevented legal deforestation of Argania trees and help maintain the remaining population of this wonderful tree. Lately, Israel has also started growing Argania tree from the original wild Moroccan stock using the cutting technique.

The Argania tree has an average lifespan of 200 years, grows to an average height of 10 meters and the crown has an average diameter of 14 meters. Goats in Morocco are known to climb these trees to eat the fruits and leaves.

Moroccan Argan Oil

There are 3 million people in South Morocco working under various cooperatives in the Moroccan Argan Oil industry. It is a very labor intensive and time consuming activity. In order to extract 1 Kg (~ 2 LB) of Moroccan Argan oil, 30 kg of kernels and approx 16 hours of labor is required. This is the reason why Moroccan Argan oil is rare, expensive and nicknamed “Liquid Gold”.

The seeds inside the hard nut (kernel) is used to extract Argan oil. The roasted seeds are then grinded and squeezed to extract the oil. The extracted oil is then filtered several times to remove any impurities. The paste left after extraction is still oil rich and is used as animal feed.

Nowadays, the oil extraction process is much faster and efficient thanks to the use of latest technologies. However, it is still a labor and time intensive process. Cracking the hard casing of the argan pit is still done manually. Press extraction machines are now used which enables faster oil extraction and also increases the quality and shelf life of the extracted oil.

The oil constitutes of 80% unsaturated fatty acids. The unroasted oil is used for skin care and is increasingly being used by Cosmetic companies in their products.
